The 5 Most Photogenic Instagram Spots in the Zillertal

Let's be honest: anyone who holidays in the Zillertal and doesn't share a single photo – nobody will believe they were really there. And that's no wonder – the valley is so breathtakingly beautiful that the camera practically jumps into your hand. Turquoise mountain lakes, dramatic summit panoramas, dreamy alpine meadows and mountain huts that look like they've stepped straight out of a picture book.

To make sure your feed really shines after your holiday, we – your hosts in Aschau – have put together our five absolute favourite photo spots, with insider tips on when the light is best and how to reach them most easily. Charge your camera, check your battery, let's go!

1. Olperer Suspension Bridge – The Zillertal Photo

A small suspension bridge spans a mountain stream – with the Schlegeis reservoir and the glacier massif stretching out in the background. This is probably the most shared photo from the entire Zillertal – and once you stand in front of it, you'll immediately understand why. The symmetry, the water, the mountains: simply perfect.

The ascent of just over 600 metres is manageable for families and fit hikers alike. Start from the Schlegeis reservoir – the bus runs directly from Mayrhofen. Our tip: head out early in the morning before the crowds arrive. The morning light on the water is the best time for photos anyway.

2. Granatkapelle at Penken – Quiet Beauty Above the Clouds

The Granatkapelle at Penken is one of the most beautiful photo hotspots in the Zillertaler Alps. This charming chapel, surrounded by breathtaking mountain panoramas, offers a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable photos. A small chapel, mighty peaks all around – and when the clouds hang low, the mountains seem to float out of the mist. Magical.

The gondola to Penken runs directly from Mayrhofen. Once at the top, the chapel is just a short walk away – ideal even for those not planning a long hiking day.

3. Schwarzsee above the Berliner Hütte – Mirror Calm at 2,472 m

The picturesque Schwarzsee at 2,472 m, situated above the famous Berliner Hütte, is ideal for breathtaking mountain photos. On windless days, the peaks are reflected so perfectly in the dark water that you have to look twice to tell which way is up. An absolute dream photo – and because the route is a little longer, it's usually much quieter here than at the Olperer bridge.

The Berliner Hütte in the Zillergrund can be reached via the Schlegeis valley. Allow half a day and bring enough water – the route is worth it in every respect.

4. Torseen at Eggalm – An Insider Tip for Nature Lovers

Anyone wanting to photograph away from the main tourist flows will find exactly what they're looking for at the Torseen at Eggalm. Once you've passed the boundaries of the Eggalm ski area, a wonderful alpine world of naturally formed lakes opens up – and hardly anyone knows about it. The morning and evening light bathes the lakes in a golden glow that will push your camera to its limits.

Some sure-footedness is needed for the path, but in return you'll be rewarded with a stillness and vastness you won't forget in a hurry.

5. Rastkogel Summit – Sunrise for Early Birds

A sunrise at the Rastkogel is one of the most beautiful experiences in the Zillertal and will inspire your followers to seek out this magical experience for themselves. The orange light creeping over the ridge while the valley is still in shadow – that's the Zillertal at its very finest. Not for late risers, but the photo more than makes up for the early start.

In summer, it's best to set off from the mountain station before sunrise to reach the summit in time. Don't forget warm layers – it's cooler up top than you'd think!
